GIVING HANDS is a Quilting Matters’ community project providing an opportunity for members to use their creative quilt-making skills to benefit local, worthy causes.  Our current focus is on making beautiful, quality quilts for babies/children ‘at risk of homelessness and/or domestic violence’ and currently seek refuge at the South Hobart Womens’ Shelter.

You are invited to join the Giving Hands team.  My wish is that while you are ‘making for others’, your own techniques and skills will naturally grow and develop during your Giving Hands experience.

Donated/recycled fabric will be used throughout the project.  Batting is kindly being donated by Stitching and Beyond Tasmania.

We will use monthly workshop sessions to initiate projects, work co-operatively, grow our skills and bring current projects to completion… before moving on to the next design.  Most project making will be done outside of the studio.

The studio accommodates eight people per workshop session. Please email Trish to book your place each month…

  • six stitchers – byo sewing machine & rotary cutter
  • two helpers – byo rotary cutter, ironing, fabric sorting & keeping the troops fed & watered.
  • First pattern will be Fresh Beginnings (a Jan Mullen design).
  • You may choose to work independently, in pairs or in a group… this will be project dependant.

Wednesdays, 10am to 1pm – drinks & nibbles provided

Recently we gifted 12 splendid quilts to the children at the Midland Womens’ Refuge.  I feel extremely proud of our achievements this year… the high standard of work and the willing support and enthusiasm within the group is a credit to the girls.  A tremendous effort and a marvellous team indeed!

KITEZ pattern is a Jan Mullen design.

A fabulous bundle of children’s quilts were delivered to a local Womens’ Refuge just in time for Christmas… Jan Mullen pattern ‘With Kissez Spread’.  We completed the year with a large bundle of small (18″x24″) neonate quilts to gift to both Princess Margaret and King Edward Hospitals.

20 quilts were made by the Giving Hands’ team-of-twelve over a period of nine months in 2012… a wonderful result and a very rewarding year for Giving Hands as a community.

The quilts were made with donated fabric in a variety of RED prints ranging from pale pinks to rich, warm browns… what a wonderful gallery they make!

  1. five humidi-crib quilts for premmie babies at King Edward Memorial Hospital,
  2. five lap quilts for Donovan House Day Centre, Forrestfield, and
  3. ten quilts for children at Koolkuna Women’s Refuge (these children don’t suffer from life threatening illnesses… however, they are without a home and often have to leave in the middle of the night with their Mum, leaving behind many of their possessions.)

FRESH BEGINNINGS pattern is a Jan Mullen design.  The pattern was chosen for its simplicity… to focus on colour and design and to reinforce techniques and skills during the group’s first year together.

Fabrics were mostly donated.  Machine piecing and quilting were done on domestic machines.  Some quilts were made by individuals and most were made in group sessions.

Doreen Smith, Lesley Moon, Elaine Gustavino, Lorraine Gregoriadis, Jennifer Williams, Marnelke Colegate, Joy Thrum, Sue Feast, Karen Adams, Sue Burgmann, Kate Williams and Trish Wykman… a truly inspiring 2012 team!

Looking ahead to 2013… Quilts are made with donated resources and in 2013 our focus will be on making quilts for ‘babies and children of all ages‘.  We will gladly accept donations of 100% cotton fabric in novelty prints, dots and stripes in brights and pastels.  Cotton voiles for baby wraps will be especially welcomed.
