"Thank you so much for a really enjoyable UFO day yesterday, it was terrific. Thanks also for that lovely bowl of delicious soup. Your UFO days are always such good fun – the day always flies by!!"

Welcome to Quilting Matters where we run personalised classes to help develop your patchwork and quilting skills and techniques. We’re looking forward to working with you… to begin or further your journey with quilts.

It’s snowing in the Huon Valley today.  After a howling overnight storm we woke to snowflakes gently floating and falling every which way on the breeze… a frozen yet strangely warm welcome to this Winter Wonderland.  Luckily, we are holed up at Vanson’s in the Valley and snug as bugs!

We arrived in Tassie on Saturday morning 9 July (Taswegians now for five days) after relaxing on the Indian Pacific to Adelaide, a drive to Melbs for time with our daughter and a ferry ride across Bass Strait to Devonport!  All went well and without drama.  We hadn’t realised just how exhausted we were till we both came crashing down with colds in Melbourne… not surprising after our ‘great big push’ over many many months to leave Perth!

Now, it’s time to find a rental for the next little while… to hunker down over Winter and relax into Tassie life, to further shape our thoughts about the next stage of our lives and to find land and build our cosy nest.  SUCH fun!

We have declared today a SLOWing down day… music is on, there’s a hand stitching project on the coffee table waiting for me and after lunch we may even have a look at something on Netflix!  An indoors, tea-drinking day is perfect for observing river activity from many windows overlooking the Huon and farming countryside!

If you are interested in progressing your stitching prowess, Jan Mullen (my stitching mentor/teacher) is recommencing classes at her North Fremantle studio in August.  She is also holding a studio sale this Saturday 16 July, making it a perrrrfect time for you to head along for some bargains, get a feel for her studio and chat to Jan…. I know you’ll love her too!

Saturday 16 July is fast approaching and I have started to move the piles into position. I have placed a few quick photos to show you a tiny touch of goods available at MUST GO / VERY LOW prices.
Fabrics, yarns(including hanks of creams for dyeing), textile books, equipment, dyes, leather scraps, tools, little stitched pieces, little quilts and some framed pieces reduced for the day.
Flour bags too….though they are in and out of the pile daily:)
I still have some Stargazey hard copy patterns, Stargazey Boxes, Running with a sandwich cards and Australia Post boxes to exit plus other general bits and pieces that I can happily now allow out the door.
My studio is often a conduit for free in’s and out’s and these donated items, including meterage of fabric, will be for sale – with money going to Auntie Di’s Ethiopian fund helping the School of St Yarad.
Come with cash – I have no credit card facilities available.
WHERE: STARGAZEY, 8-100 Stirling Highway, North Fremantle
WHEN: Saturday JULY 16,  9am – 4pm
I just can’t help myself…..because I need to teach and you need to learn/focus/finish. A small selection of classes will be offered starting in August. I anticipate that the major demand for classes will focus on three areas;
  sew & ufo – help problem solving/ finishing/starting
mentoring – developing using your ideas & my advice
pattern/technique – whole group session  e.g a quilt pattern.
Classes may be quilt based or textile-art based, finishing or starting a project – the pricing is the same.
group classes  OR  private classes with your group
(sew/ufo, mentoring, pattern/technique)
night $80 – 7pm to 10pm
half day $80 – 10am to 1pm OR  2pm to 5pm
day $120  – 10am to 5pm  BYO lunch to share
minimum of 4 students, maximum of 6
 private individual tuition
content negotiable (sew/ufo, mentoring, pattern/technique)
$30 per half hour
You may arrange and book a session together with friends?
You may also request a particular skill session on a particular date and I will put out a call.
Or you may simply propose a date that suits you, if I can do it we’ll open it up to the world.
At the moment I am flexible with structure and timing, but I will also be keeping this venture quite small.
for DATES & DETAILS go to my blog
I will keep all the dates and class details updated there under the CLASS heading.That’s it from me for the time being folks.  I’ll pop in from time to time with updates from the little island so, talk soon.  I think of you all lots… and smile real big:)))

Love Trish xx

Hi everyone

We are well and truly SOLD here at 16 Cagney Way! Cull pack, cull pack, cull pack… is our mantra at the moment!  The house is looking less homely and the studio is looking less like the glorious space we’ve all enjoyed for so many years.  Fabric, machines, books, tools, etc. have been gathered into tea chests bound for Hobart.

For various reasons, some things didn’t make the cull and will be left behind!  Sooooo, it’s time for a studio sale to help clear the decks. As usual… first in, best dressed.

STUDIO SALE and give-aways
Many things that I don’t see myself using (or finishing) in Tasmania will be on offer at reduced prices or free….

* Upholstery fabric @ $10/medium garbage bag (supplied) – choose some beauties and fill your bag to the brim.  There is ample and I would dearly like to see it all go to good homes.  Perfect for some of the projects we’ve done in class… Waggaz, Horizontal Strippy and Hexagons are a few that spring to mind.  The Overlocker makes short work of upholstery fabric… like a hot knife through butter!  Let me know if you require patterns!
* Fabric – cottons, silks and woollens + fabric scraps
* Quilt Tops
* Unfinished Quilts – for YOU to finish
* Assortment of old blocks – free
* Second-hand Rotary rulers (laser cut), cutting mats and cutters – less than half price
* Stargazey Black Boxes
* A few home items

Come with cash I have no credit card facilities available.

WHERE:  Quilting Matters, 16 Cagney Way, Lesmurdie
WHEN:  Friday and Saturday 17 & 18 JUNE, 11am – 4pm.

GROWING CHANGE… your vote will make a difference
Close to home and our hearts… we would be very grateful if you would take a couple of minutes to support our son, Harry and his visionary and committed colleagues who run GROWING CHANGE.  Growing Change is a voluntary organisation who have recycled a couple of unused bowling greens @ The North Fremantle Bowling Club to grow healthy food and to create a place for the disadvantaged in our community to belong, be supported and make their own contribution.

Your important VOTE will help Growing Change qualify for a grant to help realise their dreams.  If you have already voted, many thanks.  If not, please do so and ask your friends to do so as well:)))… thank you for helping to make a difference.

This is an important exhibition and a ‘must see’ for anyone interested in textiles.

WHERE: Spectrum Project Space, Edith Cowan University, 2 Bradford Street, Mount Lawley
WHEN: 18 June to 7 July, Opening night – 17 June 6-8pm
HOURS:Tuesday to Friday 10 am-5 pm, Saturday 12pm to 5pm
ARTIST TALKS: Saturday 25 June 2pm & Wednesday 29 June 1pm

For those looking to be part of a local contemporary textile community I highly recommend you visit the exhibition to meet and talk to members and to see what they are up to.  Check them out online too WA Fibre and Textile Association.

POLLARD DESIGNS workshop programme for 2016 is out!  I have participated in many of Trudy Pollard’s natural dyeing workshops over the years and recommend them highly.  Learn from a passionate artist and Master Dyer in a nurturing and creative environment.

Ed and I head out of Perth on Sunday morning 3 July bound for Adelaide on the Indian Pacific, onto Melbourne to visit our daughter, Bonnie, then over ‘the ditch’ to the Huon Valley in Tasmania… not even three weeks away!  We move with mixed emotions… leaving our son, Harry and dear friends will be extremely difficult but knowing we will see most of you again either in Tassie or in Perth somehow relieves my occasional heavy heart.  Our focus is strongly on what lies ahead… lots of unknowns and plenty of adventures await!  Yes, I know… it’ll be COLD!

From time to time I’ll pop into your inbox to say hello.  If you don’t wish to receive updates from Tassie simply unsubscribe below:)

See you at the Studio Sale… for some bargains, a cuppa, a natter and some laughs:)

Much love, Trish x

Hi there one ‘n all and welcome to Autumn and cooler, more comfortable stitching weather… divine!

It’s been a time of great activity over Summer for Ed and me… we’ve toiled tirelessly and consistently and now our family property (home & studio) in the Perth Hills is on the market.  It is looking bright ‘n beautiful and ready for new owners to enjoy it the way we have over many years.  Our beautiful stitchers’ studio has delighted many of you and is, we feel, a uniquely distinguishing feature in this sale on many levels… potential studio, home business, teen retreat, etc. You are welcome to peruse its FOR SALE readiness and share with family and friends if you wish.

Once sold, we will be relocating and retiring to the beautiful Huon Valley in Tasmania.  In the meantime, the studio will open for UFO days only on a ‘play it by ear’ basis until we depart.  See dates below.

POLLARD DESIGNS‘ workshop programme for 2016 is out!  I have participated in many of Trudy Pollard’s natural dyeing workshops over the years and recommend them highly.  Learn from a passionate artist and Master Dyer in a nurturing and creative environment.

Whilst visiting family and friends in Sydney recently we went to GRAYSON PERRY’S exhibition, MY PRETTY LITTLE ART CAREER @ THE Museum of Contemporary of Art, Circular Quay… on till 1 May. Oh, my word!  An enormous body of work, a brilliant show, I urge you to go… certainly not to be missed if you are in the vicinity.

If you are looking to be involved in a Perth textile community I highly recommend becoming a member of the WA FIBRE & TEXTILE ASSOCIATION.  Guest speaker at monthly meetings.

december15 🎄FESTIVE WISHES…

Happy Xmas everyone!

All of a sudden it is festive season once again.  It seems to creep up very quickly while we’re busy doing other things, doesn’t it!  I hope you too are enjoying time with people who are very special in your lives.

We celebrated another successful year of Giving Hands with lunch at Core Cider House early this month.  A gorgeous day, a beautiful orchard venue and delish food… we lingered in conversation and laughter for at least three hours.  Proudly, this year we made over 60 neonate quilts for two major Perth hospitals.  Thank you ladies for your wonderful stitching efforts and generous hearts.

You will find a visit to Treasure Ships @ AGWA, while you are in the CBD, totally worthwhile.  It really is unmissable folks!

I’m off to Sydney early in 2016 and a visit to Grayson Perry’s ‘My Pretty Little Art Career’ @ Museum of Contemporary of Art is most definitely on my agenda!  Can’t wait!  You can see a couple of his tv programmes on iView.

If you are looking to be involved in a Perth textile community in 2016 I highly recommend becoming a member of the WA Fibre and Textile Association.

Ed and I recently returned from a recconnoitre/holiday in Tasmania with a strong resolve to make Tassie our new home in 2016.  As we headed south of Hobart we came across a delightful town along the Huon River called Franklin.  Franklin is home to the Living Boat Trust and the Wooden Boat Centre and has a strong creative community.  We felt ‘right at home’ in Franklin and will return shortly to get to know it in depth.

Meanwhile, we are preparing our home in Lesmurdie ‘for sale’.  We’ve accumulated quite a bit during our 28 years in WA and won’t take it all to Tassie.  There will be things to give away and there will be things to sell.  Most likely, there will be a garage sale for household stuff plus a fabric/habby/book SALE from the studio when I get to sorting that area of my life.  I’ll let you know if and when that will happen!

Speaking of celebrating… October 2015 marked the 10th anniversary of QM.  This is a particularly wonderful milestone for me on several levels.  Along the way you girls (still waiting for the guys) have provided me with tremendous support, wonderful friendship, fun and learning… I thank you so very much!  Most probably QM will continue in Tasmania but I suspect in a different format.   I’m not absolutely sure what that will look like just yet and I’m happy to let things unfold in the fullness of time.  It will, of course, be fun and full of learning!

2016 CLASSES…
UFO Fri/Sat will be on offer each month (until we sell) especially for you to complete projects and/or embark on patterns that particularly enchant you.

UFO Fri (10am-5pm) 15 Jan   4 PLACES
UFO Sat (10am-5pm) 16 Jan   1 PLACE

UFO Fri (10am-5pm) 19 Feb   6 PLACES
UFO Sat (10am-5pm) 20 Feb   3 PLACES

Please check timetable for updates.

I look forward to the ‘buzz’ of UFO days… lots of different projects nearing completion is very satisfying and starting a new project has it’s own excitement.

Xmas is a pretty special time.  This year our family is scattered worldwide and our hearts and thoughts will extend to various parts of Oz and New York as we celebrate with dear friends in WA.
Wishing you a wonderful Festive Season and I hope to see you in New Year 2016.
