"I am so excited with my first Fresh Beginnings quilt. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with us. I am thinking about making another one."

WELCOME TO GIVING HANDS

GIVING HANDS is a Quilting Matters’ community project.  It provides an opportunity for members of the QM community to give to local, worthy causes by using their skills and creativity.  We make quilts for children and babies to serve a growing need in the community:

  • local Womens’ Refuge
  • King Edward Memorial Hospital – neonate ward
  • Princess Margaret Hospital – neonate ward

Come and join us… as a member of the Quilting Matters community you are welcome to join the Giving Hands team… we make beautiful community quilts to gift.  It is helpful to have the fresh beginnings course under your belt… so you bring good skills and confidence to the group.  Your own techniques and skills will naturally grow and develop during your Giving Hands experience.

2014 COMMUNITY QUILTS

IMG_0058Recently we gifted 12 splendid quilts to the children at the local Womens’ Refuge.  I feel extremely proud of our achievements this year, the high standard of work produced and the willing support and enthusiasm within the group.  A tremendous effort and a marvellous team indeed!

2012 COMMUNITY QUILTS

the quilt stack 2012Twenty quilts were made by the Giving Hands’ team-of-twelve over a period of nine months in 2012… a wonderful result and a very rewarding year for us.  The quilts were made with donated fabric in a variety of REDs ranging from pale pinks to rich, warm browns… what a wonderful gallery they make!

Elaine Gustavino 2012

OUR THREE RECIPIENTS…

  1. five humidi-crib quilts for premmie babies at King Edward Memorial Hospital,
  2. five lap quilts for Donovan House Day Centre, Forrestfield, and
  3. ten quilts for children at Koolkuna Women’s Refuge (these children don’t suffer from life threatening illnesses… however, they are without a home and often have to leave in the middle of the night with their Mum, leaving behind many of their possessions.)

All quilts were based on Jan Mullen’s FRESH BEGINNINGS pattern.  The pattern was chosen for its simplicity… to focus on colour and design and to reinforce techniques and skills during the group’s first year together.

Fabrics were mostly donated.  Machine piecing and quilting were done on domestic machines.  Some quilts were made by individuals and most were made in group sessions.

Doreen with stack 2012LOOKING FORWARD…

Most quilts are up-cycled using donated resources.  In 2013 our focus will be on making quilts for ‘babies and children of all ages‘.  We will gladly accept donations of 100% cotton fabric in novelty prints, dots and stripes in brights and pastels.
Cotton voiles for baby wraps will be especially welcomed.
